Help, Got a 3 TB drive from Ebay and connected it to to my USB 3.0 port. It is recognized by Win 7/64bit as a 465 GB drive. How do I get the 3TB drive back?

Solution
If it wasn't a brand new sealed box drive, how sure are you that you haven't been scammed?

Someone could easily take out the 3tb drive and stick in a 500gb... which formats down to exactly 465gb.

It needs to be initialized as a GPT drive and then formatted on capable hardware. Is it in a USB caddy or is it a USB external drive?

I would use diskpart to clean it and then initialize in disk management as GPT.

Thank you for responding. Yes this is a USB Drive. I have used disk part and it now shows up as a gpt drive with capacity of 465 GB.

Where is the 3.0 TB capacity, do i format the drive? what sector size?

What is the model of your computer or if self built the motherboard model?

And for the diskpart commands, did you do these:
diskpart
list disk
select disk n (where n is the USB drive)
clean

and then go into disk management, select the unallocated USB drive and initialize in GPT using the wizard and then format the full size available?

The Case is snap together and pretty easy to take apart once you know where the tabs are. Try downloading and running seatools to get the model # of the drive inside. Most sizing issues with the 3tb usb drives result in it showing 746gb (which is the remainder after subtracting the 2.2tb mbr max size) and why I think maybe you are a victim here :-(

edit - you may need to plug it into a usb2 port for seatools to see it.

There's no need to be sorry for bothering us, cpsbiz - this is really useful information. I'd like you to post the seller's e-Bay ID so I can look at his other items to see if he is selling 3Tb internal drives. Nice little business he has there and it's time he was put out of it.
