Is my 2500k bottlenecking my 7990?

I've been getting less than expected results with my 7990, pretty much on a par with a single 7970 (I reference BF4 but it applies to all high-demand games I've tried). My friend has the exact same setup, except his i5 isn't 2500k, it's a 3rd generation. Although where his is 3ghz, mine is 3.3ghz.

I had read the 3rd generation i5's are needed to utilize the PCI-E 3.0.

This true, anyone know? I've been scoring 40-60 fps, where as my friend (with same card, slight less GHZ on his CPU) has been smashing 70+, and sometimes into the 100's... Really trying to figure it out!

Any help appreciated.

i am assuming your both playing at the exact same settings? and 2500k at stock speeds would be a slight bottleneck but an OC would fix that. Do you monitor your usage? what is your cpu/gpu usage when playing? Also are you using windows 7 or 8 as windows 8 i know gives a performance boost to BF4

Thanks for rapid response.

I looked into over clocking i5 first, as I know its capable. Yet my motherboard is P8H77-V LE, and from what I can gather it can't over lock CPUS.

Or I'm just not finding the info I need?

Ahh ok. Least I know then!

Based on what I've said would you pin this as likely culprit for lacking FPS, with my friend CPU and performance in mind?

Thanks for responding everyone

seems like its the culprit another thing have you got the latest crossfire profiles from amd and make sure in your games you are playing in fullscreen and not windowed as crossfire only works on fullscreen modes

If it's a case of scoring just a few extra FPS with over clocking my CPU then that isn't the problem (although I will still get a new MB to do it), as my friend is getting on average at least 30fps+ than I am.

I'll take my card to my friends rig first, see if its the card itself!

Cheers chaps

I've fixed it. Yet I'm entirely embarrassed, as it doesn't quite count as a fix and more the incompetence of an epic noob...

I've been playing all games with V-SYNC ON! People had suggested I turn it off, but me being a noob I just thought it shaves a few FPS off, and not caps the FPS to 60!!! My friend with the comparative rig absently mentioned it before... I couldn't believe I didn't know that. BF4 now plays averages around 80fps, and often hits 100+ (although I think it looks a little sexier with v-sync on).

So, card is in full working order! Although, having learned about the potential of my CPU I will be buying myself a new motherboard this month, to get the most out of the high demanding games. So my stupidity has led me to some useful intel.

Thanks again to everyone for chipping in, and I apologise for being a complete airhead!

For the record I also upgraded MB (z77-a) and overclocked i5 2500k to 4.5 and it made a nice difference on top of the performance I was getting. Boosted it's performance on 3D Mark to higher than friends comparative computer. Boom.
