I am currently running a 30 day trial of windows xp that ive had to keep redownloading because i cant afford a new os. The old os (vista) crashed and i dont know anyone with a recovery disk for vista and i needed the computer so i threw in xp. I was wondering if it would be worth it to get a linux operating system. my main questions are which linux operating system should i choose, what are the pros and cons over windows, and what are some major changes to expect
thanks for future help

my computer (gateway gt5628)
intel core 2 quad q6600, 2.4ghz
intel schroeder town g33 motherboard
2 gb ram
500gb hdd
xfx radeon hd 4890 gpu
400w psu

Your best option would be to just try it. Linux isn't for everyone.

Just about all the popular distros have a 'LiveCD' option. Just run it directly from the CD, without installing anything.
Try it, and see if it does everything you want/need.

Try this one: LinuxMint

Just about any system built in the last few years will do 64bit. Windows or Linux.

As far as cinnamon or mate? It will burden you the cost of a blank DVD to try both. See which one you like.

i tried those out and i liked both of them. Someone i know told me about reactos, and i was wondering if there were any downsides of using that. It is already windows program compatible, so it will be easier for me to use in that regard

do you know of an easy way to use windows applications with a linux os. A dual-boot system wouldnt work because id still have to keep reinstalling windows. i want to stick with the already proven linux but it depends on how far behind ReactOS is. from what i read here theres a few features that are helpful, but most of them i wont use.

If you want to use full 'Windows' functionality, you need to purchase a Windows license. Be it XP, 7, or whatever.
WINE may work for some applications.

ive googled if the main programs i use have a linux download, and the only issue was google drive and office viewer, which i would need for word processing. I saw a few programs that are suppose to work like that so i think im gonna stick to the linux until i can upgrade my computer and get windows 7

OpenOffice or LibreOffice have mostly MS Office compatibility.

thank you for all the help. I've downloaded the Linux Mint Cinnamon 64 bit one, and it works great so far. There are a bunch of great features and its really easy to learn.
