I have:

Dell Optiplex 745
Old cpu: Pentium D 3.40
New cpu: Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40 ghz
8 GB RAM
Windows 7 64

I did a lot of research before getting a new processor and found that the Q6600 works well with this 745 system, so went ahead and bought it. I installed it today and everything started up fine, Windows recognized the CPU and all seemed fine. I am using Antec Formula 6 as my thermal compound as it got good reviews and I watched a video on Youtube where someone used that on the same system.

However, I noticed that the fan wasnt working. When I first booted it up, it gave a spin and then stopped. I was able to boot up fine, but I notice the fan just keeps doing this. One blast at start up and then nada. HWMonitor does not show the fans in the screen.

It never shut down on me and aside from this problem, it never gave me any notice. Obviously, the fan not working scares me, so I shut down immediately and re-installed my old processor (the Pentium D) and also checked the fan connector on the MOBO and cleaned the fan as well. Upon reinstalling the old processor, Im having the same problem.

Im at a loss on what to do here.

Thanks

EDIT: I just noticed that my fan is spinning very fast, but its not making noise, nor is it showing up in HWMonitor. Im lost.

Solution
As long as it's moving air you're good. If you are concerned about temps, don't rely on fan readings in HWI - check the core and package temps.

Are you sure you got the cpu fan on the correct header? Sometimes the m/b manufacturers put a case fan header right next to the cpu fan. It should work on either, but the systems expects and requires a fan on the cpu header.

Yep, Im positive. I didnt change anything in respect to the fan. Its got a simple black connector and theres only one place it can go on the MOBO. I just checked it and made sure it was clean and then put it back into place.

I updated this as well. The fan is spinning, but its not making noise nor showing in HWMonitor

Whats the best program to do that with? I have HWInfo open (I reinstalled the new CPU once I noticed the fan spinning and it still is) and "ThermMon" all read OK and are in the green.

It freaked me out because when I first started the computer the fan made its usual noise then stopped, but its still spinning, its just silent and the computer has not shut down nor given me any sort of warning.

I have that. Is there a range that I need to look for?

EDIT: Intel says 71 C is its limit, but my cores are all at around 30-35 C right now. I assume that I am okay here.
