gateway M-1625 OS was Vista, now Win 7. camera works, microphone does not!

Gateway Support have the drivers and applications for your laptop, but from taking a quick look they don't appear to support Windows 7 on that model (ie no Windows 7 drivers, only Vista). That may account for your problems. However, generally speaking, some Vista drivers will work on Windows 7 so it may just be a case of re-installing the appropriate Vista drivers: http://support.gateway.com/us/en/support/default.aspx
