I didn't know what speeds my router could go up to, so I bought myself a 450mbps wifi adapter for a new computer I am building. However, my router only supports speeds up to 300mbps. Since my adapter can't support that, will it crash my router or anything? My router is 5Ghz if that helps.

Solution
You said your router only runs 300 so in your particular case it won't run at 300 but your card will detect that the router does not support 450 and drop back down to 300.
The router and the card will negotiate everything, they will decide on what the fastest common features they have. I doubt your router is 5g only unless you disabled the 2.4g. Pretty much the only thing you need to set is the WPA/WPA2 security key and you can leave the rest just at default. You really only need to adjust things if does not work well.

Are most 5 Ghz routers capable of 450mbps?
