Hey guys, I'm relatively new to overclocking and I wanted someones advice in this area of expertise. My goal is to overclock the CPU to 4.0 GHz. I will immediately include my system specs before I carry on any more.

CPU : Q9650 @ 3.00GHz ( OC'ed to 3.60GHz ) w/ Arctic Freezer Pro 7 Rev.2

GPU : GeForce GTX 550 Ti

RAM : G.Skill 8GB DDR2 1066 ( PC2 8500 ) 5-5-5-15

MB : ASUS P5Q-PRO ( Updated to BIOS 2102 )

I've searched up and down trying to locate a guide for overclocking on the P5Q MB and/or Q9650 but unfortunately most of the guides I find that might prove to be informative ( at least to a beginner ) are taken down. I'm guessing due to the age of the processor, and motherboard, etc.

All I have done to increase the speed of the processor is by taking the FSB to 400 in my BIOS. I have not changed one other variable while OC'ing my computer, which is my concern while I'm trying to push it further. It has been amazingly stable with everything that I've thrown at it, including Prime95 for several hours.

I'm not looking for the "super awesome" settings that everyone uses to magically hit 4.0GHz on this processor. I realize that every single hardware component is unique to itself and I respect that. All I am looking for is someone to help guide me in the right direction so that I don't cook my CPU. I really don't know what other information to list that might help so if I left something out that would be informative to you please let me know and I will try my best to retrieve it.

Thank you!

@ the OP. This is some really good advise! :) The only thing I could add, not to undermine schuckley at all, is I tended to want to keep my temps no higher than mid 60sC under load.

lower RAM strap 1..
Raise fsb..
about 1.46-1.53 on NB ..have a fan blowing on it..
1.3-1.4-ish Vcore..
FSB term around 1.38
GTL .630 CPU .590 NB gTL or as close as you can get to that.

Hey guys, thanks so much for your help. I have plugged all of the settings that you suggested for the exception of the NB GTL, my motherboard doesn't have that option. Here are the pictures of my bios settings. I am going to run Prime95 for a stability check and then report back. Thanks again!

Ran Prime95 for about half an hour. Here are the results.

Approx. two minutes after stopping Prime95.

Should I be concerned over the temperatures? What should be the next thing to experiment with?
