so I know there needs to be outlets but what is the wire called that needs to be connected to the computer to be connected to the internet? I have a dilemma, my brother has a desktop connected to the internet and I want a desktop too but how would I connect my desktop to the internet if he's using the cable? My desktop is in my room which isnt very near to his room. What can I do? Sorry im not too knowledgeable when it comes to this. I do not want to use wifi for my desktop at all because my wifi disconnects rather often everyday. So wifi for my desktop is not an option. I know you guys are very knowledgeable here and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

The internet comes into your home via a modem (either a cable/satellite/DSL). Currently, it sounds like your brother is connected directly to the modem and no one else is able to connect to the internet. What you need to do is get a router. Instead of your brother connecting directly to the modem, the router connected directly to the modem. Think of the router as having one input (from the modem) and multiple outputs to several computers. You could then run Ethernet cables from the router to each computer and each computer would have access to the internet.
