So, i am hopefully getting a new rig for xmas now. The majority of the components are decided, the only remaining part is the graphics card. I can get the GTX295 for £45, so should i? I will use the rig primarily for audio work, but may use it for gaming too, but only playing things like BF3 @ decent fps and settings, or Crysis 1 or something. no serious hardcore super modern games.

Build is:
i5 3570K,
ASRock Extreme4 Z77,
8GB Corsair Dominator (1866, CL9, 1.5v),
2TB Toshiba HDD (SATA3),
2 x Corsair Force GT 60GB SSD (RAID 0 for 1GB/s read and write),
Win 7 U 64,
And a graphics card.

So should i get the GTX 295 or can i get *better* for that pricepoint?

Cheers :)

the 295 is such an old card that i''m surprised they still exist. i fear it's on sale due to issues. it was a monster card back on the days.

the 2x60gb ssd is a terrible idea. raid controller dont forward trim commands. get a 120gb instead, it populates double the flash channels on the sandforce controller so you get something like a raid 0 anyway with a single point of failure....

^Exactly, the 650 Ti Boost is on par with the 295, except it runs much more efficiently and it has DX11 support, the GT 630 is weaker than even the 9600 GT from early 2008 so it's an absolute joke for that price

At the very least go with a 7850/650 Ti Boost or 660/7870/270x

This 7870 XT performs on par with the 7950 at 140 pounds

If you need a decent PSU then the XFX 650W will serve you well (with enough headroom for future upgrades and some overclocking)

Like £60 tops on graphics, i am more than happy to go with second hand items. My problem is that i am unfamiliar with the AMD part numbers, their hierarchy, preicepoints, value and equivalent performance to whatever nVidia model. I am okay with nVidia ones though, i think...... this is why i want some advice :D

And i have a Corsair 650w PSU already, it should run this rig okay i think.

Cheers

Also, 2nd hand SSD, HDD, Graphics and whatever are cool because they seem much cheaper than anything new. Total system budget is like £400 ish, so with my CPU, RAM, Case and MoBo being £340, i figure £60 max on graphics should suffice. The SSDs are more a preference, but i can get them later :)
