My HP desktop has a Geforce 210 graphics card with VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports. I just ordered an ASUS 20" Widescreen 1600x900 monitor but learned it only has a VGA input. I will only be watching 720p and 1080p movies, no gaming. Should I try to sell my ASUS monitor and get one that does similar resolution and has a DVI port?

The VGA port will be able to handle 1600x900 just fine. Personally I would not get a monitor that was less than 1080p.

the image quality on a digital connection (dvi or hdmi) is better. if you used a vga connection till now on your current monitor you wont know the difference. if you have a digital one you will notice the difference from day one and will want to change the asus to one with dvi or hdmi input.
