I've had an ongoing battle here with my Acer 5349-2592. It started with a few random sutdowns (complete blackouts) and then eventually it just wouldn't turn on. When I hooked up the power cord, the blue or orange charging light would come on, but when I hit the power button, it would go off for about 3 seconds and the machine would do nothing.
I eventually tried a new power adaptor, and it started working again. After a few weeks it started doing the random shutdowns again, but only when doing really CPU intensive work. After some initial research, I began to suspect a heat and cooling issue. I blew out the machine with compressed air from the outside, and got an external fan as well. This helped, but only for a while. The shutdowns resumed again.
At this point I decided it was time to open it up and have a look. Upon removing the cooling fan and dismantling it, I found it to be 90% plugged with dust on the exaust port. I cleaned it all out properly, and the machine was running cooler than ever but kept shutting down. Eventually it went back to not starting at all again, even though the battery light comes on when plugging in the power cable.
So, now I am looking at hardware replacements and need some advice. I suspect that the shutdowns were originally caused by the "emergency shutdown" due to the heat, and from what I have read, this system can get a bit faulty once the switch has been tripped a few times. I have been looking at motherboard replacements. They are readily available, but most do not include the CPU. My question has to do with what parts I need. Is the fault in the motherboard or the CPU?? Which one do I need to replace??
Any and all help, advice, or additional ideas are greatly appreciated. This machine has been a great little workhorse over the past couple of years, and I'd love to get it running for a couple more.
