I had my computer running a dual boot of Windows XP service pack 2 or 3 (Not sure) and ubuntu 12.04. I wanted to get rid of Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition for ubuntu and now when I start the computer I receive the error message
no such partition
grub rescue>
I do not have a live cd or anything for this machine and I am lost as to what to do to just have windows xp only on this machine.

I've tried booting from a windows cd i downloaded the cd iso and then used an iso burner to attach it to a cd and when i changed the order for the computer to boot from cd/dvd drive it just brings me back to the grub rescue thing

Then something is wrong with either:
A) the downloaded windows iso
B) the dvd drive you used to burn the disk
C) The dvd drive reading the disk
D) the cd its self
E) maybe you did not correctly save the boot order in bios.. try manually to select boot device by pressing f1-12 or whatever your computer requires.

You need only the recovery console for XP. You can either create it from a working copy of XP or download the ISO image here from the good folks at majorgeeks. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=229209 The link also gives you a good detailed instructions on how to use it.

FYI, If you still have a live copy of Ubuntu you could install testdisk and there is an option to install a generique MBR that would fix you up. Also many of the repair disks out there include a fixmbr command.
