We have a pretty old net gear modem, it has some kind of wireless functionality built into it, really not sure how since it's a modem. All our devices can go online but lately, devices keep getting discoed for a few seconds and I'm only getting about 4 mbps. I bought a wireless router, how would I hook it up since the modem already has a WAP. I'm guessing you need to disable the modems wifi first ?

No, do not try to disable the current combo unit. Most of them do not do well with that and many have ISP specific firmware.

Just attach the new router as a wireless AP and use a different channel so it does not interfere (selecting from the non-overlapping channels 1, 6, 11). Make an LAN to LAN connection, give the new AP a different SSID so that you can selectively connect to it, use WPA2 security and personal AES encryption, up to you if you want the same passkey, turn off the DHCP in the new AP, give it a static IP address in the network range but outside the router DHCP assignment range (and enter that same IP address for the AP into the router static table -- you will need the AP MAC address to do so).
