hard disk not detected

I recently upgraded my PC config from 512 mb RAM to 1.5GB and installed an extra 250gb hard disk with the already in use 80gb hard disk.
What happens is sometimes wen I start my computer the newly installed 250gb hard disk doesnt show. if i reboot than it appears. any reasons why this is happening?
any solutions?

There are two possibilities: either the HDD is dying or it has compatibility issues with the chipset/motherboard it is connected to.

One of my HDDs shows up on my PC 50% of the time I connect it directly to the motherboard but works fine if I dump it in a USB box.
