Hi guys,

My recently built pc keeps freezing only for about 30 secs or so but from googling it sounds like it might be an unstable CPU. as a newbie I'm not really sure how to check for this and fix it if I can..

it's a AMD FX-6 6100 6 core processor and Asus M5A78L Motherboard

Cheers

I have the exact same CPU could be 3 things a faulty CPU in which case return to AMD or it could be a PSU issue in which case you could return that or it could be a faulty Mobo. Firstly try a new PSU if you have one spare or borrow one from a friend.

What bios version is the board running? It should be 0507 or later to support your CPU.
What are your temperatures? CPU and GPU(can download and use CPUID HW monitor to check)
What power supply are you using? Brand/model

I've updated the BIOS and started running prime95.. All seems good so far.. If it starts working OK StJohn what do you reccomend me to overclock too seeing as though you have the same CPU

I wouldn't recommend overclocking that cpu if your using the stock CPU cooler.
If you want to overclock i recommend buying the Coolermaster Evo 212.
If you do really want to overclock on the stock cooler i recommend only going up to 3.3 or 3.6Ghz.
With the Coolermaster Evo you should be able to get 4Ghz quite easily:)
