Ok,so dumb question I imagine,im only a litle tech savy so I'm not 100% sure here,i recently bought a hp from a friend and it has a 148gb hdd and i would like to replace it with my 500gb hdd from my old acer, but when i try it wont let me boot it,so i can use all the help i can get

Solution
once windows is installed on a given computer's hard drive, if you try and move that drive to an entirely different build (mainly a change in motherboard), windows detects that it is in a completely different system and will not work........period. As I said previously, you can move the Acer drive but windows will require either the HP's original OS be installed on it or a completely new OS w/key is needed for the Acer drive to be used as the boot drive in the HP.

that's because the OS realizes that it is in a different computer. The OS license is tied/restricted to the original motherboard it was installed with. You can move the drive but you will have to spring for a new OS if you want to boot the HP from Acer hard drive.
