I have an Asus M5A78L-M motherboard and a Nvidia GTX 650 and have been trying to connect a monitor to each. I only have one cable compatible with my GPU (a VGA with an adapter) but using it disables the onboard graphics. I have tried using the BIOS but the only thing I was able to do was change the device priority, which allowed me to use the monitor connected to the board, but then disabled my GPU output. If I wanted to have multiple monitors, would I have to buy a cable, new motherboard or would changing the right settings work?

The one in my GPU is connected with an adapter with a VGA cable. (Not sure what the port is called). I've tried the other one with both VGA and HDMI and both have the same effect.
