I was wondering if an old ASUS motherboard would be able to run a PowerColor Radeon HD 7870ghz edition video card.

No, i don't plan on keeping the old thing around, but i might use it for a little til i save up some cash.

Stock HP MediaCenter m7640n
MOBO: ASUS A8M2N-LA

yeah, its fine. you can mix manufacturers like asus, gigabyte, MSI, with power color or whatever.
but looking at the motherboard:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00757531&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en#N253

it has a PCI-E x16 slot albeit gen 1.0 and the card is gen 3.0 - according to gen 3.0 specs its supposedly backwards comaptible - and i am sure it is but i just haven't seen it in person.

but i'm sure its fine.
