Can you connect a better router to a modem/router?

Solution
My first choice in dual band would be an ASUS RT-N56U, which has been on some very good sales over the weekend, notably at Newegg. It is best in class for wireless range and many other features.

In most cases, I would just use the router of the combo unit and attach the other router as an AP to use its better wireless radio. It is an easy set up and works with all the combo "gateway" units that I've come across. You can either turn off the radio in the primary router or leave it on as an extra on a different channel, maybe set up as a guest network if you have that need.

But if I leave both radios on, would the signals interfere? I would also like to mention that this better router is dual band and I'm curious if that would cause any additional problems with setup?

Nope, no problem at all. Use the two 2.4GHz radios on different channels (selecting from the non-overlapping channels 1, 6, and 11) and then use whatever you like for the 5GHz. Best to use different SSIDs for all three IMO though so you know which you are connecting on.

And as long as you configure it as an AP, anything that connects to any of the three radios will be using the same network and can connect to one another if you wish.

Actually after doing a bit more research, it seems like the discounted router I'm looking at is discounted for a reason. Seems to be quite unreliable unfortunately.. I think I will end up getting the Asus RT-N12. Does anyone have any experience with this router?
