I have my granddaughter on my cable dvr. how can I copy that to my laptop and burn to a dvd to send to her?

Does your laptop have HDMI input? Since you did not list any of your hardware there is no way to even begin to guess.

I think the only way to do that is via a video capture device. There is no direct way to transfer the video off the Cox DVR into the PC.
Or....aim a camcorder at the TV and play it. Transfer that to the PC.
