I've always been a laptop guy, but I now need a desktop for 3D CAD modeling in SolidEdge and UG NX, as well as some fairly extensive data crunching MATLAB programs. I'd like this to also be able to handle casual gaming. I'd like this to be a relatively simple system that won't require much component upgrading for at least a couple of years. I will most likely not be doing any overclocking.

I've done a bit of homework (thanks partly to some great posts on this forum) and I've come up with a 1st draft partial list. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I'd like to keep total system hardware cost under $1250, but I can go a bit higher if there is solid reason to do so.

Processor: AMD FX-8350 (haven't used AMD, but it seems a much better deal than i7)
Video Card: PowerColor AX7870 2GBD5-M2DH
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AM3+ (this might be overkill, should I go cheaper?)
Case: ? (Nothing ridiculous looking, good airflow, preferably some pre-installed fans)
RAM: Corsair Vengance LP 16GB (2x8)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB (Is SSD boot drive worth the money for this build?)
Optical Drive:? (I don't burn much, but a decent fairly cheap BD/DVD reader would be nice)
PSU: OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W
Monitor:? (Preferably ~24" and less than <$200ish. If I like it, I'll get a 2nd. There seem to be a lot of monitors on sale currently)

This list puts me in the ballpark of ~$1200, based on prices from NewEgg and Micro Center. Again, any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
