I built a computer and i didn't know the mobo didn't have wireless so i bought a d-link wireless adapter and that didn't work so i got another wireless adapter, it worked but only at 1mbps and my internet is 15mbps. I don't have a router, do i need one for it to work at full speed?

While that is a reasonably good signal, 1Mbps indicates a significant signal problem, I would try a USB extension cable and move the adapter around to see if you can do better.

While USB adapters with large antennae usually do a better job, the problem could also by your wireless radio signal or interference with it.

I would download the free wireless analyzer inSSIDer from HERE, install and run it, the under the network tab look and see what channels and strength you see. Are there any overlapping and what signal strength is your wireless radio?
