I have an old rig that uses a Radeon HD 6800 series card. I am in the process of building a new rig that will be using Diamond Radeon HD 7970 series card. (i-7 4770k motherboard). Is there anyway to crossfire the two cards in my new rig or will that hurt my graphics output more than help?

Solution
The 280x is really just a rebranded 7970, but is a gen up with, and it goes for about 300$, so generally unless you get the 7970 dirt cheap, you should always grab the 280x. Either way no problems enjoy your new card.

There is no way to CF those, you can only CF cards with the same chip, ie 7970+7970 or 7970+7950, thats about it. Are you getting that 7970 cheap by the way? If prices are close the the R9 280x I'd recommend getting that instead, just something to think about.
