I was going to get one of these two but what is the difference? They both look to do the same things to me and I only plan on reading discs, not burning. Would I get any benefit for the more expensive one?

Nothing that I can see. In fact, if you're not burning DVD-RAM discs , the LG model has the faster access time for Blu-Ray discs. I'd go that route anyway.

Don't forget to purchase the software to play the blu-rays.

Only difference is one is a Green Unit.

Green Focus Protecting the environment starts with green computing. E-Green engine adopted in the BC-12B1ST auto-closes drive applications when not in use, saving power to decrease ultimate CO2 emissions.
