I want to build a supercomputer ( GPU cluster) and I've looked at a lot of bitcoin mining rigs where people have installed upto 8 cards on one motherboard.

The ASRock X79 Extreme 11 is the only motherboard I know of that supports 4-Way SLI/CrossFireX at PCIe 3.0 x16 Speed.

I am assuming CrossFireX is only needed for gaming or graphics work, so can I just forget the CrossFireX and install 7 7990s (using pcie riser/extender cables)?

are you crazy? 7 7990s? that thing would overheat even if you leave it in open air? and not to mention the electricity use. and have you seen the article tomshardware posted about bitcoin mining? gpus are no longer effective enough to mine bitcoins. you need special mining systems to make a profit http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/bitcoin-mining-make-money,3514.html
but if you are dead set on it look at these mobos http://www.tomshardware.com/news/asrock-bitcoing-mining-motherboards,25092.html

Thanks for the quick reply, yes I am crazy, absolutely Bonkers.
I haven't read the article about bitcoin mining yet, Ive only just joined site and this is my first thread.

I assume the special mining systems you mention are something like the products from Butterfly Labs and others.
Im not building the cluster for bitcoin mining, I just noticed that some miners have up to 8 cards installed on 1 motherboard and I was wondering how to do the same with the mighty 7990.

As for the PSU I was looking at the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 1300W, 3 of them to power the 7990s and another 750w PSU for motherboard etc.
