dear forumers,

i am currently in dilemma right now. I just built a new pc with i7-4771, 32 gb ram
and z87 motherboard. the only component i need is a gpu.

it has been awhile since i had a desktop pc. ive always been a console gamer but i
felt that i missed a lot and want to try sth different this gen. my last desktop pc
was the one i used to play starcraft and diablo 2 lod. i use mostly laptop this past
few years (the same one ive been using since 2007).
i have been quite frugal all this while when it comes to pc and i am willing to spend
significantly this time around.

so now i am looking at a palit gtx 780 ti jetstream. also getting a good price on this one.
the etailer is listing it at the same price as the reference model.

i am the sort of person that hates to upgrade regularly (to me upgrading gpu every 2 years counts as regular).
I think it's too much of a hassle.i know im being a bit unreasonable but when i buy sth, i'd rather spend a lot at once
and use the thing for as long as i can use it and just ignore any new development in
pc hardware for as long as i use my pc (it's how i did with my laptop. i had to do a lot
of cathing up this past few weeks)

i also hate the fact that right now my pc is incomplete. it bothers me. so i want to finish
this build asap and have a peace of mind.

i know future proofing is futile, but i expect at least 4 years mileage from my build.

i have laid 2 options for me. either buy the palit and have a good night's sleep or buy a cheap gtx 770
and wait for maxwell and then buy whatever high end gpu on offer.

the reason im considering the second option is because athough gtx 780 ti is just released,
i believe the tech is at the end of its cycle. by the time maxwell comes out, it would be outdated.
and maxwell comes out in 2014, which is just a few months away.

the only qustion is how much more performance the new maxwell gtx 880 will have over this current one?
if it's 15-20% i can live with the palit but if it's more it might be worth the wait (though i still hate the hassle,
not to mention the agony of waiting)

But from my observation, rarely has new tech seen an exponential improvement over the old one. so in the end,
it might not be worth the wait. and you can wait forever not buying anything as new tech is constantly around the corner
whilst tormenting yourself over decisions of what to buy which will end up wasting time. I don't want to be miserable
forever. But i can tolerate being miserable for 6 months or less.

Please help me solve this dilemma. Thank you.

It's hard to say.

You will definitely get 3-4 years out of a 780 Ti, though. It's every ounce of raw performance left in the Kepler chip for gaming. It's impossible to say what kind of gains that Maxwell will have, and we probably won't be seeing those until the end of Q1 2014, but if previous trends are any indication, about ~20-25% max performance increase has seemingly been the norm between top end performing cards.
