They work hard a lot of pixels to process. They have a high power requirement more than your CPU in many cases! And most of them have max op temp in the 95°-105°C range. Normally in the high 70's°C under load and you have nothing to worry about

... did older ones just work by magic? All GPUs have processors in them... that is how they work, it is a specialized processor to run the graphical elements on a PC so the CPU doesn't have to. The reason they get hot, is because these processors require quite a bit of power to run, more power = more heat. Sound cards do a fraction of the work a GPU does, and they also have processors on them, but they don't require even close to the amount of processing power a graphics processor does, so they barely produce heat at all.
