I've got a computer that originally had XP on it and I've upgraded to windows 7 with upgrade media. I am rebuilding the computer (basically the whole thing) and I got windows 8.1 upgrade media for free from my university. Will I be able to install straight from the windows 8.1 upgrade media on the new motherboard? Or will I have to first install XP and then do a clean install of 8.1?

Of course a clean install is best.

Maybe I wasn't clear. My question is whether I can do the clean install straight from the upgrade media on a new motherboard or if I have to install a non-upgrade windows first (my copy of XP) before the upgrade media will work properly.
