I have a 686 AMIBIOS 1999 mother board, how can I tell what graphics cards it can handle? I am looking at upgrading to a 280x and it will fit in the slot, but do you ever run the risk of frying one or the other?

I can't find any details on that motherboard:??:

Is it a prebuilt computer? If you have the make/model of your pc it would help.
Also what power supply does your computer have? It's important information to know when advising on installing a new graphics card like the 280x.

I took that into consideration and upgraded my power supply already to a 750W. and yes it is a prebuilt computer by Dell xps 8500, however on my owners manual it only says I have a PCI express x16 it does not give me the generation or the bus port (i.e. 1.0 or 2.0 or 3.0) so how do you know what type of slot it is? And thanks again for your time!

It is a pci express 2.0 slot. Your graphics card will be fine in that slot.
What 280x are you getting? I installed 2 AMD 270x graphics cards in my computer today and they are very long. Have you made sure your 280x will fit in your computer case?

man I didn't even think to check if it would fit, there seems to be a lot of extra room for a longer card, how long are the higher end cards? I also decided to go with a GTX 770 so it will work with the new G-sync monitor I just ordered. it says those are compatible with one another.
