All,

Noob to self-builds so very grateful in advance for any/all feedback.

I am looking to build a machine that would be good for photo editing and working remotely (on occasion - nothing intense). I do some video compression too but not too frequently.

Inspired by Boris0729 and a few others, I came up with this:

Not sure if the LG monitor is junky. I'd love to get 27" but will sacrifice size for quality (insert joke here).

Also, I'm thinking about scrapping the internal HD on this machine and building a basic NAS machine for media storage. Thinking I could import/edit photos locally and then transfer them to the NAS for storage. My wife would probably like to do the same with her photos. Thoughts on this approach?

Budget is $1000 (including monitor). I have Windows license.

Solution
1. for a workstation build, get an i5 atleast and an i7 at best
2. u don't need the Z87 board as u're not gonna OC
3. u might not want the GPU unless ur software uses GPU acceleration
rest of the build looks decent enough

Great feedback. Upped processor to an i5 (build). Might keep the Mobo as I can't find anything for less than $75 that seems solid. Will consider scrapping the GPU and adding at a later date if needed.

Any thoughts on keeping media on a NAS?
