Hi, I am looking at making another gaming rig. I only use my computer as a consumption device (play games, read e-books, and internet) with the only professional software in use being Office. Do I need to get a quad core processor like an AMD FX or Intel i5 if I want the best graphics capacity?

The people that are going to tell you a dual is just fine are the guys that are trying to justify their purchases blindly disregarding evidence and computing trends right in front of their face. Simple facts are that the enthusiast computing arena has been becoming more and more threaded as time has gone on. 5 years ago no major games or editing softwares used more than one core, now basically EVERY major game release in the past year and most every major rendering/editing suite in the past few years all have the ability to use more than 2 cores and show a performance benefit from doing so. Even so take into consideration multi taking, say you are gaming and you want to alt tab in between 10 other programs and a bunch of flash tabs in...

so i could get a cheap dual core and spend my money on ram and a powerful GPU and be fine? When I made my last computer everything was more simple. I do not want to over pay for performance I will never see or or need. I just do not want to bottleneck the GPU.

Here ya go

See the dual cores get the same FPS as the quad cores and 6 cores.

So, dual cores are enough for most games, but for some games like Crysis 3, you will be getting some performance loss.

Here are some benchmarks.

The i3 is a dual core. See how it holds up with the i5, i7, quad cores, and the FX 4xxx (4 core), 6xxx (6 core), and 8xxx & 9xxx (8 cores).

Well, I was thinking of going with an all AMD rig because i get them so cheap. The new APU stuff is confusing the shit out of me. I do have the option of getting a Phenom 9650 for like 15 bucks (brand new) but i have read that the DDR2 ram will become a bottleneck.

Short answer? Probably yes.

Are you gonna play old games? Or are you gonna play games like BF3/4 Maybe even thingsl ike crysis 3? Far cry? Get that I5 or FX.
I've been working with some dual cores the last few days and compared to my quad cores, i really notice the difference, giving these are the early duo cores so not one of the latest, but yeah i would go for a quad core.

How funny, you are comparing the CPU's for frames. Lets do some CPU Intensive taskes and then come back shall we,

And no i'm not a fanboy.i have been running AMD for the last few years.

The games I will be running is Bioshock Infinity, skyrim, and some older games. I mean i will probably be playing some newer games in the future like Eternal Crusade if it releases.

Do you see the point I am making ?? Games are using more cores FACT, even if playing old games the multi tasking ability of a modern quad will result in a much more well rounded machine and with legit quads available as low as $90 how can you even question it ?

Eh, somewhat true, I have a i5-650 dual core :(

I do agree on the multitasking stuff tho. But it has been proven that for gaming the dual cores can do just fine, just don't do any multitasking lol.

But if you would just look at the stuff i posted earlier, you might just change your mind a little bit.

And who said you had to go with the $1000 i7? A $180 i5-3470 will do just fine. AMD is all specs and not performance. Except there cards are good. When you see a little dual core i3 perform better than an AMD quad cores, 6 cores, and 8 cores, in hitman, you know that something wrong.
