I have a Acer 5742Z-4459 of a friends. He has several viruses on it and he didn't make the backup copies of his factory default disc. The partition is still on here, so I was wondering if It would be safe to burn copies of the factory default disc and not have the virus affect the disc. Or should I just do the restore by rebooting and hitting the f10 and doing the system restore like this?

Before doing anything, I would run a stand-alone scanner like the AVG Rescue CD (see below) to ensure that the recovery partition is not infected as well. Get it here:

http://www.avg.com/us-en/avg-rescue-cd

Download and burn to disk (or to USB drive). Boot from the disk. Update when asked. Do a full scan (it will take awhile) and remove all found.

This will verify that the system is clean and may keep you from having to fully re-install the system as well.

Thank you for the helpful link for that scanner. I was able to get the laptop to work last week without using this Rescue CD. But, I just downloaded it and tried to but it using IMGBurn and I got this that showed at the end of the burn cycle. "Failed to read sector 0-31. Reason:Illegal Mode for this track"
