Computer freezes while gaming

Hi,

I've just built my PC and am having issues while playing games. While playing Total War Rome 2 my PC freezes a after a few minutes and becomes unresponsive. The only thing that helps is restarting the PC.

A simillar thing happened with PES 2014 (the game froze but i could open task manager and turn off the procces) but i solved that by using MSI afterburn to regulate my GPU fan speed because it was overheating.

I've already tried a couple of things but nothing helps so I decided to ask here for some advice. First off, here is my build:

Mobo: Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
CPU: AMD FX8350
RAM: 2X4GB Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 (both)
GPU: ATI Radeon HD3870
HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST3250410AS 250 GB
PSU: Corsair GS600

I know that my HDD and GPU are older thatn the rest of the components, but i checked, and should be able to run Total War Rome 2. I've tried running it with the lowest setting but it still freezes my PC.

CPU and GPU temps are good (CPU about 30 C, and GPU up to 60 C while running MSI after burner and playing the game).

So far, I've tried cleaning my registry (using ccleaner) and defragging (using cdefragler) the hard drive. I've also upodated all the drivers on my PC.

Beside freezing ingame, my PC also gave me a BSoD once, while updating some drivers, but I managed to update them later with no problems. Also, while defragging my PC restarted. (don't know if it was BSoD or something else, i left it overnight to defrag). I tried defragging my disk again and it went without problems.

Since defragging my disk, cleaning the registry and updating all drivers the system seems stable, but the freezes during Total War Rome 2 continue (haven't been able to really test it on PES2014 because I borrowed my gamepads to a friend, but I played one 10 minute game on high setting and it played without any lag or crashing). Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Are the games genuine or Pirated? Pirated games can cause such issues because of bad cracks and stuff like that.

If they are genuine then my apologies but nothing can be done about software problems without actually taking a look at the system when it runs the games. Please ask someone who is good with softwares to take a look at your system personally he might be able to spot the problem.

If you can't find anyone, then i would suggest that formatting your system and reinstalling OS, would be a 100% sure fire way of solving any kind of software problems. Problem should go away if it is caused by software.

Another thing you can try by yourself is to check and see if your motherboard has an onboard GPU and both the Onboard GPU and...

Another thing you can try by yourself is to check and see if your motherboard has an onboard GPU and both the Onboard GPU and Dedicated GPU are enabled and they are switched based on load using some software like AMD's Hybrid Crossfire X. Some games do not work with such systems an example F1 2013. If this is the case , you can try disabling your onboard GPU and try to run the game again and see if it crashes again.

Try these and see if it helps. post your findings and we will discuss further.

Must admit, the game is pirated, it's a reloaded torrent (thought to try the game out before buying it).

About reinstalling windows, did that less than a week ago and that's my last option (though i doubt it will get to that if Rome 2 is the only game that's going to bug me).

As for an onboard GPU, my MOBO has none, so that's not the issue. Guess I'll try running some other relatively high-end games and see if they work. If the issue persists, I'll post about it.

Thank you for your insight, much appreciated.
