Due to an issue with my brother constantly using the internet to play video games, my family has had to completely remove the router, thus leaving us without internet, which makes it very hard for me to get my online school done. My question is, how do I connect to the internet without the router. I have tried plugging my laptop into the plug in the wall where the router is usually located, but the ethernet connection in the wall is a different size than the one in my computer. I have deadlines in which I need to get my school work done, so I'm looking for a quick fix here. Thanks in advance!

What did the previous router attach to (DSL or cable modem)? Or something else?

Theoretically, if you still have internet service, you can connect your PC directly to the same connection the router used previously. However, you need to ensure that your on-board firewall is fully operational and up-to-date, AND that your anti-virus software is current. When you remove the router from your network, you also remove the protection it afforded connected devices.

It was the standard ATT Uverse router, no modem or anything as far as I know. It came with a white wire that looks similar to an ethernet cable, but it does not fit into a regular cable slot, it is slightly smaller.

I am also not worried about the protection it provided, I just want to get my internet connection. I don't use anything risky that could potentially harm my computer anyway, all I do is my school online, and I have a pretty good virus protection software, so that should work fine.

Then you are out of luck. uVerse uses a 2-wire connection (DSL) to come into the house and connect in the Residential Gateway (the router). (I used uVerse at a previous address). Without that router, you can't access the internet.

Do you still have uVerse TV?

The uVerse TV doesnt work either because it needs to be hooked up to the router. Is there any way I could go out and buy a new router and hook it up the same way as the uVerse router? or does it need to be the one that they gave my family?

You would need to contact AT&T to see what options you have. At this point, you likely have no service at all with uVerse and even if you connected an appropriate device you still wouldn't have Internet access.

So I would not be able to use an alternative router?

Not if you don't have a service account with AT&T or another service provider (ISP).

Am I missing something or this a problem your parents need to address? They should reinstate the router and restrict your brother's computer so he can only use it at certain times.

Of course, if you are that brother and are looking for a way to circumvent your parents' actions, we wouldn't want to help you.
