So I just tapped out a huge post on my tablet and it's not showing up so trying again... Apologies if it turns out to be a double post.
Current system: gateway fx-6831 desktop, Intel h57 chipset, core i7-860, ssd+data drive (both MBR, not GPT, in AHCI mode with latest Intel RST drivers), win 7 64 bit, radeon 6950.
Getting an MSI z77a-g45 and core i5-3550k plus new ram, keeping the radeon.
The Intel chipset drivers readme says it only installs inf's for the current chipset, and you need to be in the OS to install them.
Will the system boot on the old drivers so I can update the chipset drivers? Or could i boot in safe mode and install them? Anyone done such an upgrade and can give advice?
Complicating things slightly is that I use grub2 to dual boot ubuntu and win 7. but I can handle that if I lose my MBR. I assume I'll have to go into the uefi bios and set it to some sort of legacy mode and may need my windows repair or install thumb drive. I can manage to repair ubuntu later.
Alternately I do have a system image of the ssd made with acronis true image 2013 and plus pack, which can restore to different hardware. But you need the .Inf files for your chipset and drive controllers on a thumb drive. The IntelRST inf files are easy, but for the Intel chipset ones I'm not sure what inf/dll's I'd put on there as the download has many folders and contains inf files for every chipset.
Thanks!
