The wife recently removed my decision making as to what PC I'd be putting together to replace my now non-existent desktop. (Ok, it's been a few years and I've been running on a Black Friday 2011 $350 laptop as my main machine).

She picked up his and hers Dell XPS 8700 machines for us. Thankfully, she bought the base i7 model so I can put the cash I've been saving up for a diy machine towards upgrades for this thing. It comes with a 4770 (non-k) and that'll do for me. Wasn't really planning on overclocking much anyway.

I've got the following PSU available that I had in a C2Q machine I inherited from a friend: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

With that as a replacement for the anemic 460w supply in the 8700...should I be good with something like a 7970?

My gaming plans are for games like BF3, maybe BF4, Saints Row series and some older stuff that I've had clogging up my steam library but haven't been able to play because my main machine sucks.

I do my gaming on a single 1920x1080 screen, so I don't need too much beyond being able to max out at that resolution. Ultra settings in everything applicable would be nice. Perhaps something with some longevity? Budget is about $300 or so.

the psu is very solid. will not be an issue anything you choose.

depending on your budget... 280x, 780 or 780ti
if you can/want to wait for custom cooled 290(x) they fit in between the 780 's

edit:
sorry i only saw now that you specified the budget. 300 means 280x. fair and square.
