I've been having a strange issue lately where I will play a dvd and the sound and image will drop out every few seconds. Sometimes it will fix itself, others I have to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in and it will work fine. Because of this quick-fix, I swapped the HDMI cable with the one in my cable box, but the issue persists, cable box works fine with either cable. The strange part is I have never noticed the player do this when playing a blu-ray, only dvds. Any idea what could be causing this?

Bad DVD pickup. Clean the laser with a cotton swab see if that fixes it.

I just tried your suggestion but the laser seems virtually inaccessible. I took the cover off of the player, but the disc tray is screwed shut and covered by several wires that are pretty difficult to unplug to move out of the way. I'm afraid of damaging one of them too because they're so thin.

If it's tough to get to, you may just have to live with it. They DO sell "cleaning DVDs" although how well those work I could not say, never tried one. http://www.amazon.com/Maxell-DVD-LC-DVD-Lens-Cleaner/dp...
