Hello everyone! I'm going to upgrade my computer and by upgrade I mean assembling it from the scratch) I've decided to start from CPU choice and that brought me to hesitation. I have three alternatives as title said: intel core i7 4770 (without 'k'), intel core i7 3820 and amd FX-9370. I'm not so experienced in dealing with hardware components so I would like to hear some advices from you, guys.

I'm involved in OpenStack development so all the time have to deal with virtual machines (often nested) thus looking on high performance system. Also I would like to take a break sometimes and play some heavy game =) And which processor from mentioned above will be most suitable for my needs?

Thank you for your time)

Solution
i7-4770 is probably the best budget choice. Haswell based Xeon would be better for VMs and multitasking, could even get a motherboard that supports ECC memory. E3-1230v3 is a potential, though the 1245v3 isn't much more. i7-3820(can overclock like a K) or i7-4820k for a decent multipurpose workstation, but again an LGA2011 Xeon, Sandy or Ivy, would do better for VMs.

I would avoid the FX9370 unless you are a serious enthusiast, essentially just an overclocked FX8350 with a huge TDP, I think they even bundle it with a closed loop cooler now.

Let the AMD vs Intel begin, shall we?
Intel cost more than AMD plain and simple out the gate.
But the old saying holds true, you get what you pay for.
Intel does have better benchmark scores.
I myself love AMD because of affordability.
But i will be the first to admit that Intel has better scores.
It only depends on your budget, pretty much.

Thank you guys for quick answers. I think that I will stick to intel CPU's but not Xenon though because of limitations of my budget. Also it seems that motherboards with socket lga2011 are a little bit more expensive than those with lga1150 so I've put this aspect into consideration too. And at the end core i7 4770 seems as it is good and reasonable choice for high performing home system)
