Is it possible to hook up on monitor to the motherboard port and another monitor to the gpu? motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2 and my gpu is Nvidia Gtx 760

normally this is true but in this case you can enable a bios option called surround view. it will let you plug an additional monitor to the dsub port of the mobo.

how do i turn on the bios option for that? and i am not going to play games on it, it is just for having extra work space

restart, go in the bios (usually the delete key while it posts), and on the integrated peripherals menu there should be this option. it's called exactly that, surround view default disabled. make sure the integrated graphics is also enabled - same menu. doesnt matter how much memory you alocate for it. when done, esc to go to top menu and save and close. once windows starts it will see you have a new video card and after the driver is installed you can plug a monitor and you should be good to go.

List all the ports that is available on your monitors.
If they are all vga then

Dvi-i to vga adapter, connect with vga cable
Dvi-d to vga adapter, connect with vga cable
Active dp to vga adapter, connect with vga cable.
Nvidia don't really need a active dp for 3 display setup, but get the active just in case and to save the hassle of passive adapters not working. Also there isn't other choice, when it comes to vga. There are vga to hdmi cables or adapters but i heard they don't work to well or don't work at all.

i was told that the dvi-d shouldnt be used for another monitor so i didnt want to buy another adapter just for that if it isnt going to work, but now hearing that the vga to hdmi doesnt work well i dont know what to do.

did you find that surround view option in the bios - in the integrated peripherals menu? it will let you use the vga port on the motherboard for the second monitor.

According to the manual, Surround view only works with AMD video cards.

And his board does not have a 2nd PCIe x16 slot.
