I asked this question nearly a year ago but never built anything. However with XP being unsupported early in the new year and my DVD drive having recently died it's probably time to get more serious. Since I last looked Haswell has come out and DRAM prices have skyrocketd :(. I think I have a system that will work for me but thought I should give it another run through the experts here.

This is what I have and some explanations as to why is below http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2dIrf
The computer is a general purpose computer with music recording and some lighter gaming at it's core. I like to keep systems until they die or are nearly dead (current one is coming up on 8 years) so would like similar here

Component Selection Base Price
CPU
Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor $289.99
I have read that 4770 are better at music production.

CPU Cooler
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler $29.99
I will O/C but nothing crazy hence the K model and the EVO should be ok for mild O/C

Motherboard
ASRock Z87 Extreme4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard $127.99

Memory
Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1333 Memory $124.98
16G for plug-in (they take a lot of memory)

Storage
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk $149.99
I'll keep my current ~250G HD as a storage drive for now probably even though 1TB drives are cheap

Video Card
Asus Radeon R9 270X 2GB Video Card $209.99
I think this will be ok for what I do, currently my most video intensive game is LOTRO

Case
Fractal Design Core 3000 USB 3.0 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case $49.99
I could keep my current case but I'm not sure I want to give the configuration and the fact that my dog keeps resetting the computer when she comes over and lies beside me while I'm using it :p

Power Supply

XFX 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply $59.99

Optical Drive
Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer $16.98

Operating System
Microsoft Windows 8.1 - 64-bit - OEM (64-bit) $99.98
not 100% sure about this but it would seem to make sense to get the most uptodate software

Any and all input is welcome
Thanks!
