So, I just recently bought the Astro A40's 2013 Edition, and I am having mixed feelings. I've been using these primarily on console and have noticed that I'm not really liking surround sound. When I switch to stereo, it almost feels more natural. I should probably note that I've previously used the P11 Turtlebeach for nearly 3 years and I loved them despite how cheap they were. But as I mentioned with my new A40's I'm just not digging this surround sound thing. Everything sounds distant and a bit echod. When I switch to stereo everything sounds amazing, I even have great directional accuracy even with stereo. I know I have the surround sound hooked up right but I don't know... it just doesn't sound right. Is it because I've been using stereo for 3 years and that's what I'm used to, or is surround vs. stereo just a preference thing. If my surround sound is working correctly and I just prefer stereo, should I downgrade because I'm not taking advantage of the Virtual 7.1? Or does the Astro excel in stereo mode as well? The Astro does sound better either way. I know this is a lot of questions but I'm just not sure if I'm wasting my money or not if I were to stick to stereo. But for all I know the Astro could have defective surround sound. Any thoughts?

you may just not like surround sound headphones. also keep in mind that the drivers are smaller as a consequence of them being surround sound capable headphones. perhaps they seem quieter as a result unless you turn the volume up.

i'm not sure how the astros handle stereo sound but perhaps all the drivers act as one bigger driver (playing at same time).

virtual surround is used for stereo headsets not surround. perhaps you like virtual surround better than the real surround sound headphones.

personally i like using a pair of ath-m50s for gaming even though they are stereo. works great i have no need for surround on headphones. that is why we have virtual surround anyways.

Actually, it's not that surround sound sounds bad, it's more of its been hard getting used to, so the main question is... Am I getting the full experience the Astros can provide on stereo, or should I just downgrade. As of right now the Astros sound amazing even in stereo. So once again, any thoughts?

Astros don't use multiple drivers so they aren't true surround sound headphones. They use simulated surround like any 2.0 headphone would use.

My Turtle Beach HPA2's are true discrete surround sound and work great, too bad they don't sell them anymore.

Happy surround, the Prisoner.
