So back story first. I built a system a couple years back with dual graphics cards in anticipation of getting a second monitor. Instead Ive just been using my TV as a 2nd which works just fine with extended or duplicate monitor views. I currently have both displays plunged into only one of the two cards (which are linked) because it has both a DVI output and an HDMI for the TV. The problem I'm starting to run into is that the newer more demanding games (BF4) are lagging when using both displays. I though the problem was because they were both plugged into one card and maybe the 2nd card wasn't being fully utilized even though they are linked so i tried plugging the HDMI into the 2nd card but it didn't even acknowledge it. So are both cards being used to there maximum? Memory and all? or do I need to find a way to make the 2nd card acknowledge the HDMI?

Sorry its a bit long winded

Solution
full p/n of your mobo? your main PCIe slot is likely x16, but the other is probably x4 (wel, x16 size but mostly empty and just x4 electrically). that might seriously cripple your graphics.
What cards are they? If they are AMD, you can only plug your monitors into the primary card, which is usally the top one. With Nvidia you can put the connectors on either (I think).
Dual monitors wouldn't increase the load placed on the graphics card during gaming, unless you were gaming across both which isn't exactly ideal.

They are AMD Radeon HD 6800 with CrossFireX
I'm not exactly running the game on both but one is running the game while the other displays maps and menus that interact with the game live

I can do that and it does work but I start getting excessive lag and I'm not sure if its to do with both monitors being plugged into one card or if its completely unrelated but I know it doesn't lag nearly as much with only 1 monitor running.

Oh shit I looked into this your right the 2nd slot is only 4X. Dammit I really didn't want to buy a new mobo. Is this making a significant problem? Like manofchalk said they are AMD cards and both monitors are plugged into the main card and the cards are linked with cross fire.
