It's still decent, right now there is the R9-270 and 270x
But the HD7950 would be a lot faster than all of them and it cost around the same price

A 7950 is about $300 where the 7870 is $140 (newegg).

For price to performance ratio the 7870 has been the winner now for a few months, it will happily run BF4 at high settings and give you 35-45fps. The 7950 is still better of course and if you have the money for it you should go for it, otherwise, to answer your question, yes the 7870 is a good GPU.

the r9-270 is just a rebranded hd 7870 underclocked and with a bump to the memory frequency clock and less tdp, the r9-270x is the same but with a better Oc.

I think if you can find a good hd 7870 Oc like the sapphire one you´ll be at the same category or even better with less money.

Don't forget that the 270/x has mantle support fully ready where the 7870 will require a bios flash to fully support mantle. It's the main thing between the two.

In either case we really can't tell you if Mantle will be worth it as we have not been able to see it in action as of yet.

I know it is a whole lot better then its predecessor the HD 6870 I was using. for the price it is a decnent card but seeing how the r9 270 series cards and the 7870 have very simalar specs I would hope that there would be a price drop on the 7800 series cards. So depends on what the price is but if you can get one cheaper that when I last saw them ($200-$250 in Canada), than you can't go wrong

The cheapest HD7950 is around $200, if it was $300 then there is the R9-280x. Which is a rebadge HD7970 GHz Edition, but with a slight lower clock speed. The attractive part is its lower price tag.

Bios flash?? can you please send some sources about that, because last time I checked mantle was compatible with any gcn card.

Read up on it via AMD and reps on overclock.

What I've learned is:
1) R series is designed for mantle use, fully ready.
2) GCN cards are capable of mantle easily but it's not fully optimized, as such requiring a bios flash for full fluidity.
3) Any GPU can actually support Mantle (including nvidia, w/ drivers) but they will not and can not be fully optimized for it.
4) It depends on the Mantle SDK incorporated into whatever game on how well it works with any of the 3 categories. Information from Frostbite 3 (BF4) outlines full compatibility with R series and 7000 series (GCN) and minor compatibility with any other GPU that manages to support it via drivers.

My recommendations on the R9 series to avoid flashing is under the circumstance that some games will not be fully written for 100% Mantle capability.

I still don´t get where did you see about bios flashing and stuff because those links just say about gcn compatibility and the option for nvidia to jump on it too.

"Mantle is the harmony of three essential ingredients

A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that allows applications to speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture
A Graphics Core Next GPU, like the AMD Radeon™ R9 Series, R7 Series or HD 7000 Series GPUs
An application or game engine written to use the Mantle SDK"

The R9 270 is an overclocked radeon 7850, and the 270x is an overclocked 7870ghz edition.

The r9 265 is the rebranded hd 7850, the r9 270/x is a rebranded hd 7870.

"When AMD introduced its Radeon R9 270, based on the Curaçao GPU (formerly named Pitcairn), all of the chip's 1280 shaders remained active, just as we came to expect from the Radeon HD 7870. Necessity is the mother of invention though, and sure enough, the Radeon R7 265 sports the Radeon HD 7850's same configuration."
