It's still decent, right now there is the R9-270 and 270x
the r9-270 is just a rebranded hd 7870 underclocked and with a bump to the memory frequency clock and less tdp, the r9-270x is the same but with a better Oc.
I think if you can find a good hd 7870 Oc like the sapphire one you´ll be at the same category or even better with less money.
Don't forget that the 270/x has mantle support fully ready where the 7870 will require a bios flash to fully support mantle. It's the main thing between the two.
In either case we really can't tell you if Mantle will be worth it as we have not been able to see it in action as of yet.
Bios flash?? can you please send some sources about that, because last time I checked mantle was compatible with any gcn card.
Read up on it via AMD and reps on overclock.
What I've learned is:
1) R series is designed for mantle use, fully ready.
2) GCN cards are capable of mantle easily but it's not fully optimized, as such requiring a bios flash for full fluidity.
3) Any GPU can actually support Mantle (including nvidia, w/ drivers) but they will not and can not be fully optimized for it.
4) It depends on the Mantle SDK incorporated into whatever game on how well it works with any of the 3 categories. Information from Frostbite 3 (BF4) outlines full compatibility with R series and 7000 series (GCN) and minor compatibility with any other GPU that manages to support it via drivers.
My recommendations on the R9 series to avoid flashing is under the circumstance that some games will not be fully written for 100% Mantle capability.
