My Radeon HD 5770 finally died on me a few months ago and I've been searching for the best replacement ever since. I have a stock i7-860 @ 2.8 GHz processor and an Intel H57 motherboard. With my CPU and motherboard taken into consideration, I'm trying to find the absolute best video card for the price, compatibility and performance. I'm looking for a GPU that won't be bottlenecked by my slightly older CPU. However, I would like to play games such as Battlefield 4 and CoD: Ghosts at a somewhat consistent 70 FPS. I plan on recording the games with programs like DXTory so I would prefer to have some breathing room for FPS drops. I'd appreciate anyone's input on the subject.

As has been my general response to such questions in the past, the HD 7870 / 270x (between $120-$250 depending where you shop). It's price to performance is astounding. Your CPU would be a bottlekneck in a lot of newer games such as BF4/Ghosts but for everything a bit older you should be fine.

For reference, the 7870 and 270x are basically the same card, the difference is that the 270x has full mantle support ready where the 7870 will need a bios flash for full support. In any case, a 7870 will run BF4 at Medium to High settings but your CPU will end up determining where it stands.

Does it matter which one I choose, then? Is the 270x compatible with my setup? My PSU is plenty for both of the cards, btw.

Your motherboard can support it, the problem will be your case. I know that mobo is m-atx but you did not say what the case is, if you have a standard mid tower either 270x or 7870 should fit fine, but if you are using a small form / low profile / micro case it is unlikely you will be able to fit much of anything in it.

I'm pretty sure it's a mid tower.

You will be fine with a 7870/270x, they aren't that long.

Two last questions... I'm aware that the 7950 is slightly better than the 7870 and 270x. Is that card also compatible with my CPU and motherboard or should I just stick with the 7870/270x? I've also been looking at the PowerColor 7870 XT Myst edition. Between the 7950, 7870 XT Myst, 7870 (non-myst) and the 270x, what is my best choice? Price is not an issue for the more expensive 7950.

Any GPU is compatible, the problem you will likely see is bottleknecking in newer games. As long as your PSU meets the requirements and it will fit in your case, you should have no issues running anything. It's the bottlekneck that will get you.

Have you considered nvidia cards like GTX 760? you mention game recording and currently nvidia have a solution for those who like to record their game with almost no performance impact with their shadowplay technology.

Alright, cool. I'll probably go for the 7950. If I notice any issues, I'll try overclocking my CPU just a bit to balance things out. Thanks for the help! :D

His CPU is going to prevent any serious recording. Won't matter what GPU he has.

I have considered that card in the past. I hadn't considered it as of recently, though. I'm now stuck between the GTX 760 and the 7950. lol
