Hi all,

I need some advice about buying a new CPU. Here is my current setup:

-Asrock x58 mobo with a LGA 1366 cpu socket
-Core i7 920 2.66 Hhz
-12GB of DDR RAM at 1333 MHz
-Radeon HD 7870 graphics card

First of all, I am well aware that my hardware is outdated. My computer is about 4 years old,. but I can use it for just about anything and I haven't really experienced any performance issues....except perhaps when it comes to gaming these days. A lot of the latest games require some seriously good hardware, which I mostly have. I guess my processor is the only real limitation for me now. I know the 1366 socket has been discontinued, but I think I can still get another few years out of this current motherboard. It has a good memory capacity (I think it can support up to 32-GB's) and it also has support for PCI-express 3.0 graphics cards. So would it be wise to just upgrade to a higher end 1366 i7 like this one?:

I know this is a six-core processor. So I think it has enough horsepower to keep me going for awhile. I doubt any programs in the next few years will require something higher than what my setup has if I were to get this specific i7. Or am I naïve/wrong to think that? I am just looking for the best cost-effective/efficient solution without having to do a completely new build.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your response. I'll try to see if there are any good deals on a 4000 series intel processor. But in your opinion for how much longer can say an i7 970 be relevant? As far as I know, no games have yet taken advantage of 6 core technology. I suppose it has long-term staying power?

I'm sorry but you're wrong man, future games will have a multicores support for sure, and BF4 is using it now, game developers now are forced or I might say oblige to use multi cores on gaming now since PS4 and XBone has 8 cores.
