I'm looking for some new PC speakers since my old ones are starting to make some interference like sounds (at first I thought one of my HDDs were going bad).

I'm not really sure where to start looking, or what exactly makes a good set of speakers. I want something with decent quality without being overly expensive. Preferably something less than $75, but the budget is flexible. I also strongly prefer a hardware volume control.

Other than that I'm not all that picky. Any advice is appreciated, and thanks in advance!

2.0, 2.1 or 5.1?

some logitech sets you may be interested in

z323
z506

of coure there are others like these

a quality 2.0 set is going to get you some better sound however lacks bass (no subwoofer).

a comparitively priced 2.1 set is going to have quite a bit more bass due to the subwoofer but may sound a little less crisp as a good 2.0

a 5.1 set in the same price range is not going to sound as nice as the first two however nets you much more volume and surround sound.

any of the options arent going to sound bad provided you dont buy the lowest of the low.

of course you could always go with a cheaper set than what i listed if you prefer to save...

Thanks for the input! I'm thinking 2.1 since it's what I currently use and I like the extra bass, though overall sound quality is more important. I don't have the layout to use 5.1 so that's not really an option.

The 2 I am currently looking at are both by Logitech; the z323 you recommended and the z523. Any suggestions between the 2? (or any others) Thanks again!

the z523 is one step up from the z323.

while neither are "great" speakers for an audiophile they work fine for average users.

i've used the z313 and z130 and for the price they are good. the higher end models are going to be a little step up from these.

while they wont win any awards for the price you can find these for on amazon or ebay you arent going to do much better.

if you wanted a bit more sound quality perhaps the creative gigaworks (listed first in the link above) however it lacks a subwoofer which you want for bass. that kind of takes it right out of the equation.

i'm not familiar with this speaker set but the jbl creature iii is around the same budget and while not louder then some of the 2.1 logitechs some say it is clearer and a bit less muddy. worth a look i suppose.

i only listed some options... however if you arent picky i think any of the 2.1 sets will work.
