Hello, I have a Lenovo B570 laptop with an Intel HM65 chipset and a B590 Dual Core processor.

The processor offers only Intel HD graphics. Now for the new work place, I need to install on it a few Linux OS as well as MAC OSX that need a graphics level of Intel HD 3000 at the least.

I want to upgrade my processor. Here's the list of compatible processors with the chipset :
http://ark.intel.com/products/52808/Intel-BD82HM65-PCH ( please click on COMPATIBLE PRODUCTS in there).

My question is that even though Intel says all these processors are compatible, will my laptop be really capable of handling the load? There could be anything - overheat (maybe with the i7 processor, because laptop wasn't designed for a high performance processor like that), or a miscommunication with other hardware, or maybe even no compatible drivers provided on the manufacturer's website.

I'm well aware of a laptop not being easy to upgrade, especially when things are hard-soldiered within themselves, yet I'll be able to save some money in these tough days, if I could get around it.

Anyone with an experience or knowledge of upgrading laptops, please tell me whether it's a good way to go.

here is your manual: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/deta...

On page 77-78 there is a list of compatible CPUs. They are not soldered, so you should be good. But as you mentioned, this is a pretty intensive job, you have to tear apart the whole machine to do the work.

Intel I7-2820QM 2.30G 8M 4c D2 PGA processor
Intel I7-2720QM 2.20G 6M 4c D2 PGA processor
Intel I7-2630QM 2.0G 6M 4c D2 PGA processor
Intel I7-2620M 2.7G 4M 2c J1 PGA processor
Intel I5-2540M 2.6G 3M 2c J1 PGA processor
Intel I5-2520M 2.5G 3M 2c J1 PGA processor
Intel I5-2410M 2.3G 3M 2c J1 PGA processor
Intel I3-2310M 2.1G 3M 2c J1 PGA processor

thanks @ACTechy
I just have one question - will the drivers provided by intel and lenovo work properly with the new processor? I reckon they will, but I'm just want to double-check and be sure of what I am about to do.

Having never done a laptop CPU upgrade myself, I can't say anything for certain, but I would think since the rest of the components stay the same, the drivers would as well. For instance, if I upgraded my i5-3450 to an i7-3570, it would typically be a plug and play situation, with no driver issues. So if it works like a desktop scenario, I see it going fairly smoothly. But again, I've not done this myself.
