Trying to decide on a graphics card for my first DIY build.

So I've finally scraped up the money to build my first gaming rig, and I've been looking around at different parts. I've researched a lot and I understand what makes one part better/worse than another, and I have a definite price range set.

But, one thing that has been confusing me is how to decide on a graphics card. I've been looking around at all the cards and I have a basic understanding that some cards are really good, such as the titan, 690, 780, etc. But the more I look, I get more confused.

I know that the cards I just listed are all great, but I'm on a budget and they're really expensive. I'd assume that the GTX 500 series are still an alternative as they're priced the same as the newer 600 series, but they are an earlier series so I don't know what to think. Also, I've looked at the 660, which is 600 series so I assume its good, but that doesn't match up with the low price and small size.

Currently I'm looking into a 770 or something lower priced but I'll buy more than one and SLI them.

Please tell me if I'm being an idiot, thanks.

P.S. I've put together a pcpartspicker build (Using the 770 here as an example)

What is your price range?

Right now the best performance/price ratio is with a 770 or a R9 280, they are powerful enough to play at 1080p in ultra for almost all games and they are around 300$.
If you want more (780/R9 290X, etc.) it will go above 450$/500$ and then the ratio is not so good. They are very powerful but you pay a lot for the performance increase.

Price range as of now is $1200 but I can wait and make 200-300 more if I wanted to get a really nice card. I think I'm going with the 770 but I'll wait a bit to see if anyone has a better solution.
