First you need to test the hard drive with DOS diagnostic software made by the drive manufacturer, and if the test shows that the drive is failing you will have to replace it. You need to make a bootable CD containing the testing software, and you will find the download links here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
If you don't know who the drive manufacturer is, just download the Drive Fitness Test CD Image and create a CD from it. Then boot your laptop from that CD: http://www.hgst.com/support/downloads/legacy-downloads#DFT
