As gaming goes the HP would do, but if you want to play new games (like BF4) then the recommended ammount of RAM is 8Gb. Even if I personaly didnt care about the RAM I would chose the Lenovo, because HP has made a bad reputation for me, because I had already three HP computers and all of them had hardware problems (graphics, RAM and the cooler). I am writing this from a Lenovo laptop and I am not having any problems with it.

Can I ask - which did you go with?

I am trying to decide myself between an HP Envy 17" with 16GB RAM or a Lenovo Y510p 15.6" with 8 GB RAM but with a second graphics card via Ultra Bay.

I haven't decided yet because I'm not buying right now, haha. You might want to check out this forum: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1908492/dell-xps...
It might help.
